Jamie Smith

Jamie Smith’s pen-and-ink, monochromatic drawings are tangled worlds of archways, vases, flowers, eggs and dark pools. Each of these elements are personal symbols that attempt to reckon with loss and grapple with the fragility of life. The organic and unwieldy, the messy and overlapping: all translated into clean form and pattern, shadow and relief.

Smith’s recent series of wooden, hanging wall-sculptures takes her collection of personal symbols and brings them into the three dimensional world. She is inspired by family crests, coat of arms and folk art movements. Each sculpture acts as a vessel to tell the individual narrative of her symbols.

Primarily exploring the forms and mediums of ink on paper and wall-hanging sculptures, Smith’s art reflects new beginnings, the passage of time and the depths of loss.
